Benefits of Reconditioned Car Batteries

RECONDITIONED CAR BATTERIES

There are plenty of benefits we can all reap when we choose to recondition old batteries instead of condemning them to the garbage dump. Dead or old batteries are all around us, in our garages or rotting somewhere in a dump fill, irreversibly messing up the natural environment. The sad fact is that the world cannot do without batteries, but very few people know what to do with one when it stops getting charged. Batteries are used in many devices and engines besides cars. They are used in ATVs, boats, RV motor homes, golf carts, aircrafts, trucks, bikes, water sports equipment, and many other motorized devices. History teaches us that the very first battery was made in France by physicist Gaston Plante Since then the battery has permeated almost all industries dealing with motorized equipment and solar power. It is still the most preferred option for many domestic and industrial motorized applications. The lead acid battery is indeed here to stay and will not be going away soon, which is why it is imperative for the world to learn how to deal with dead batteries. Restoring them to their former strength is by far the best option. Another sad fact about lead acid battery usage is the fact that a large percentage of batteries today are being discarded prematurely, even though they can still be reused several times over. The average car owner, or battery user for that matter, is usually completely unaware that he can perform an easy lead acid battery repair operation and bring the battery back to life rather than send it to some dump to contaminate the soil and underground waterways. Don’t buy battery ever again ! Why ? Because you can learn to recondition ALL battery types NOW via this video

WHY DO PEOPLE THROW AWAY OLD BATTERIES PREMATURELY?

One of the reasons why anyone would discard an old battery prematurely is simply because it no longer charges as efficiently as it used to when it was new. There are others who feel so frustrated when it dies on them for the first time and feel they cannot take another risk with the old battery again. They would rather run to the auto retailer to buy a new one instead. A battery’s lifetime is basically five years, but it can be extended up to ten years and beyond. However, an average user generally feels five years is long enough and would rather get a new battery if the old one shows signs of deterioration, such as inability to charge fully. The majority of car owners who throw away batteries prematurely do it for one reason; a chemical process known as sulfation. We are talking about that gray/white compound that you see coated on the battery’s terminal after a long-time usage. Sulfation messes up the battery’s ability to charge properly, making you think it is over and done with when you can easily restore it back to life. Sulfation is unavoidable and eventually happens to every battery out there. Fortunately, the process can be minimized with proper care and maintenance of the lead acid battery. It can also be controlled when we all embrace the use of reconditioned batteries instead of discarding them irresponsibly.

BENEFITS OF RECONDITIONED CAR BATTERIES

Your battery may be performing optimally now, but there will come a time when you may have to find ways to extend its life regardless of the good care you gave it all along. It makes sense to double or triple a battery’s life rather than buy a new one. One of the biggest benefits of reconditioned car batteries is the fact that the simple repair saves you money. The average battery costs between $85 and $100 when new, but a reconditioned one which will give the same service for quite some time costs a fraction of the price. Many people have discovered the money saving benefit of reconditioning batteries, which is why the battery restoration industry has really picked up in most parts of the country. Reconditioned car batteries have even created a lucrative market in the jobs sector. It is a very profitable business for those who opt to take it serious. It is actually a simple trade that anyone can learn regardless of their education or professional experience. Repairing lead acid batteries for profit does not require much capital besides picking up the skill and buying a few, quite affordable materials, tools, and equipment. You can even start the business from the comforts of your garage and start making money fast. The most important things you need to start repairing lead acid batteries are a voltmeter, charger, hydrometer, and a de-sulfator for a start. You’ll also need a reconditioning car batteries kit to teach you about the entire process. We all have a part to play in preserving our natural environment. When you recondition a single battery you prevent it from being condemned to the dump where it would have contaminated the environment. Reconditioned car batteries are good for the environment. Lead, which is a major component of batteries is known as a hazardous metal and should not be disposed irresponsibly. Restoring your battery plays a major role in minimizing the amount of lead metal contaminating the environment and endangering the society. The small part you play in supporting the green movement helps the community and the entire world in a great way.

CONCLUSION

When you consider the headaches and frustrations an insufficient battery gives you, such as your car stalling in the middle of the road or having to wake up your neighbor in the morning to jumpstart your car, you’ll be grateful you learned to recondition your old batteries. The battery has powered your car for years, so when the time comes to help it serve you more, the most honorable thing is to recondition it. Think of the amount of money you save and the role you play in preserving the environment when you learn how to restore dead batteries. The process is quite simple and the full battery reconditioning kit won’t cost you an arm and leg. The benefits however, including the profitable business you can create by helping others restore their batteries, far much outweigh the cost of the entire process.

Don’t Sweat Over Your Hybrid Car Maintenance- It Is Simple!

HYBRID CAR MAINTENANCE

With energy crisis at an all-time peak, alternate fuel vehicles are slowly gaining prominence in all parts of the world. Hybrid cars are one of the new breed of vehicles that are an answer to carbon emitting conventional vehicles and hope to make a difference to the environment. Any vehicle or equipment needs regular maintenance to function at its full potential and hybrid cars are no exception. Maintaining a hybrid car is no different from other conventional vehicles in most ways. It is neither too expensive nor too complicated. This should put to rest questions like – Is hybrid car maintenance expensive? Is it too complicated and time-consuming and so on ? The two main aspects that a new hybrid car owner would consider with regards to the maintenance regime are:
 • Frequency of maintenance
 • Cost

FREQUENCY

The dual system works so efficiently that these cars require very minimal maintenance in comparison to their conventional counterparts. Hybrid cars use regenerative braking system wherein the wear and tear on the brakes is far less when compared with the traditional brakes thereby increasing the life of the brake pad. Another benefit of this system is that it charges the batteries too. The internal engine shuts down and allows the electric motor to take over in situations like low speed maneuvering and normal cruising. This reduces the wear on all engine components. This reduces the need for frequent maintenance.

COST

A sophisticated electric drive motor and a large battery pack are the only two things that differentiate hybrid cars from regular vehicles. Hence their maintenance cost is similar or even less than the routine cars. The cost of the electric drive battery pack is a matter of concern in an otherwise low budget maintenance regime. But thanks to advanced technology most of the batteries last really long and are touted to have a life of 80,000 to 100,000 miles.

MAINTENANCE TIPS

A combination of regular maintenance of the overall vehicle components along with individual components will ensure that your hybrid car will run smoothly for a long time with fewer safety issues. In addition to regular maintenance you must pay attention to a few extra factors with hybrid cars. bring your old batteries back to life instead of buying new
ones
 • Because it is a dual system dependent on an internal engine and an electrical motor you must pay heed special attention to the transmission fluid, change spark plugs, fuel and air filters routinely.
 • Enormous amount of heat is generated because of the regenerative braking system and hence the cooling system should be in prime condition at all times. Hence, check individual hoses, pipes and clamps and any additional air filters used in the motor and battery heating and cooling system.

FINAL WORDS

The presence of complicated electronic modules requires professional help to tackle major repairs. Only trained professionals are adept at empowering the entire system and handling any key repairs because of the presence of the dual voltage system wherein the power could reach 100 volts and hence repair becomes a safety issue. That said your hybrid is still an easy maintenance Eco-friendly vehicle.

PROS

 • ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION

Studies show that on average each person in the United States discards eight batteries every year. In our opinion, that is still a very conservative figure given the billions of battery operated devices in the market today. Eight batteries in a year may not seem a lot, but on a large scale, given the huge population of the US, we are talking of billions of old batteries being dumped every year. Keep in mind, batteries contain chemicals such as lead and cadmium which seep into the ground contaminating the soil or the surface water. The chemicals eventually end up in plants and animals that we eat. Rather than dump batteries, we should be recycling, if not reconditioning batteries, to keep our environment clean and live healthy lives.
 • RECONDITIONING BATTERIES SAVES YOU MONEY

Wonder how much money you can save by reconditioning batteries ? This free video will show you more !

Lead Acid Battery Maintenance

THE LEAD-ACID BATTERY

Invented more than one a half century ago, the lead-acid battery represents the oldest type of rechargeable battery. A relatively large power-to-weight ratio, completed with low costs led to their successful usage in the automobile industry, providing high current for vehicles and automobile starter motors. Moreover, being quite inexpensive as opposed to newer and high-performance technologies, lead acid batteries are used in a wide range of industries, including to backup power in cell phone towers, maintain a high power speed in hospitals, as well as stand-alone trustworthy power systems.

LEAD ACID BATTERY MAINTENANCE

Lead-acid battery industry counts for about 15 billion USD , as well as for up to 45% of the total value of batteries sold worldwide. But properly lead acid battery maintenance could be quite difficult, especially if you are not the expert in the electronics field. Read below to find a series of tips and tricks on how to easily look after lead acid batteries, as well as how to ensure its correct full battery charge.

BEFORE GETTING STARTED

Before considering ways on extending your battery’s life expectancy, get to know a little bit about your battery. Make sure you know its exact system voltage, battery compartment size, as well as your energy requirements. In addition, you should determine the type of acid battery used, choosing from deep-cycle flooded ones, to AGM or gel batteries. Choosing the right type of battery is essential for your further energy requirements. However, if you do not know exactly which type of battery to use, it is best to contact your equipment manufacturer for detailed technical support.

STORAGE SPECIFICATIONS

All batteries, no matter their type, should be stored at proper temperatures and in proper conditions. Most batteries require a 15 degrees Celsius temperature, or approximately 59 degrees Fahrenheit. However, extreme temperatures of up to -40 degrees Celsius can be achieved for most chemistry. Usually, lead-acid batteries require a full charge during storage. You can easily store a sealed lead-acid battery for up to two years before it starts to slowly self-discharge in time. Thus, before using any type of battery, new or old, it is best to first check the voltage and specific gravity, and further charge the battery until 70% at the least. Needless to say, you should keep your batteries away from freezing or excessive heating and store them in a dry and cool space. Also, bear in mind that most batteries tend to freeze more easily if they are left in discharged state, thus make sure you charge the battery before planning on storing it for a longer period of time.

CHARGING TIPS

Usually, lead-acid batteries utilize the constant current-constant voltage (CC/CV) charging method. This means that regulated current is sent to your device until the upper charging voltage limit is reached, point at which your battery is fully saturated. A full charge usually takes 12 to 16 hours, but the time period could take up to 48 hours for large stationary batteries. Moreover, by using higher charging currents or one of the multi-stage charge methods, you can reduce the full charging cycle to 8 hours the most. Also, bear in mind that all lead acid batteries are charged in three different phases, from the constant-current charge stage, to the float charge state. During the constant-current charge, the battery is usually charged up to the 70% limit in less than 8 hours. The remaining 30% of the battery is finished with slower topping charge and it lasts another 10 hours the most. The topping charge is the most important one because it ensures the battery’s ability to reach the point of full charge, meaning 100%. By gradually depraving your battery from top charging, the product will start losing its ability to recognize a 100% full battery charge, which will automatically determine the battery to lose energy faster and easier. Make sure the charging is happening in a ventilated area to prevent overheating. Also, do not allow the lead acid to reach its freezing point and avoid charging at temperatures of over 49 degrees Celsius. bring your old batteries back to life instead of buying new
onesSome common sense piece of advice when it comes to this field would be to avoid corrosion, electrical short, dry-out, sulfation or acid stratification. Bear in mind that lead-acid batteries require up to 50 full charging cycles to reach peak capacity and to fully function.

Average Life of A Car Battery

ABOUT CAR BATTERY

Typical car batteries are lead-acid and maintenance-free. Regardless of brand, most batteries are reliable throughout their lifespan, but this is not to say problems can’t arise sooner. However, you can prevent them and get the most out of your car battery simply by paying attention to it. The most important thing before you buy your battery is to check the manufacture date. Avoid purchasing one that is older than six months. You will find the date on the battery itself, often as a code. Thus, the letter indicates the month, while the number shows the year. For example, A 1 stands for January 2001.

SO, HOW LONG DOES A CAR BATTERY LAST ?

The average lifespan of a typical car battery ranges from two to five years, with four years being the most common age when the battery starts showing signs of wear down. How long it actually lasts depends on a number of factors (see below). Theoretically, a car battery can live past 5 years if you don’t subject it to extreme temperatures or to powering car gadgets, you charge it fully, etc.

WHAT MAKES YOUR CAR BATTERY LIVE LESS

Temperatures A car battery will end its life sooner if the area you live in has warm weather throughout the year. That’s because extreme heat can accelerate the chemical reaction between the plates and the electrolytic solution inside the battery. On the other hand, extreme cold can slow things down and thus help prolong battery life. Short trips and long periods of inactivity   Regularly taking short trips of up to 20 minutes will keep your battery from fully charging, and will thus drain it. Not driving your car for long periods of time will also drain the battery. Be careful that routine tests won’t pick this up. The reason for the drain is that the electrolytic solution inside the battery splits into two halves instead of remaining homogenous when you take short trips; a light acid goes to the top, whereas the heavy acid stays at the bottom. The light acid half causes the plates to corrode, and the heavy acid half to work harder to keep the car going. Other factors A rough driving style, a bumpy road or a battery that is not secured properly can all damage the plates and therefore shorten the life of the car battery. Found problem with your car battery ? No worry let us show you how to recondition it .[/caption] Aside from looking, you should also smell the battery every now and then. You know you’re in trouble when you smell the battery overheating or leaking sulfur (the rotten egg smell). Obviously, the most serious problem is a dead battery since it can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, but it can also show there may be something else wrong with your car. In order to prevent this scenario, make sure to always have a battery charger and jumper cables close at hand, as having these will eliminate the need of having to wait for another car to help you out.

HOW TO EXTEND ITS LIFESPAN

Having to replace your car battery is not that expensive, but it certainly can be a nuisance. There are ways to help your car battery live longer, though:

MAINTENANCE AND TESTING

Whenever you go for an oil change, ask the technician to use an electronic tester on the battery. This simple test will tell you whether you need to replace the battery, as it may still be working, but providing less electricity. The technician should also check the battery for corrosion and inspect the water level as part of the car’s routine maintenance. READ MORE : How to recondition Car Battery

CLEAN THE BATTERY YOURSELF

Should you notice some white buildup on the battery when you inspect it yourself, you can either take the car in for service, or deal with the corrosion on your own. You can safely do this only as long as the corrosion is mild. Safety comes first: Disconnect the negative batter post, and put the wires aside. Put on gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes from the sulfuric acid in electrolytic solution. Then, proceed to cleaning the battery proper, by mixing one tablespoon of warm water with three tablespoons of baking powder. Dip an old toothbrush in the mixture and scrub the battery. Remove the mixture from the terminal with a wet towel, and wipe it dry with another towel. If you think it may help in the future, you can coat each terminal with some petroleum jelly, but only after the battery is completely dry.
 • Insulate the battery
An insulating sleeve or blanket helps keep extreme heat and cold in check. Install the sleeve around the battery to keep it from overheating. Note that large batteries often take up much of the available space, leaving little or no room for insulation; if you cannot use an insulating sleeve, your car battery will likely have a shorter life.
 • Cut down on car gadget use
There are lots of electronics that most drivers can’t imagine doing without, but that actually drain your car battery quickly. Unplug all car phones, MP3 players, GPS receivers, iPod chargers etc whenever you don’t need them or your car is not running, and make sure not to plug them in all at once. Avoid using too much your stereo, headlights or horn when you have pulled over and are waiting to pick someone up, for instance. Finally, once you park the car, check that all the lights are off and the doors are closed, especially if you won’t be using the car for at least several hours.

Tackling Sulfation in Lead Acid Battery Repair

DEAD BATTERY

Most of you will agree that a dead battery is such an inconveniencing expense. It is quite frustrating too. Who loves getting stuck in a car that won’t start in the middle of nowhere praying some kind soul shows up to possibly aid you with some jumpstarting skills and cables? Calling for a tow truck, replacing the battery, and the time lost can be significantly expensive, especially when the breakdown becomes a daily affair. Lead acid battery repair skills may not take care of your immediate problem, but it will eliminate the expense of purchasing a new battery and will help you avoid future break downs. What’s more, you could use the skills to start a profitable business too. And the best thing about battery reconditioning is that the entire process is quite easy and inexpensive.

HOW DO BATTERIES DIE?

If you are keen on learning how you can repair lead acid batteries, it is imperative to first learn what makes batteries stop functioning as they should. Lead acid car batteries create electric power using lead plates immersed in sulfuric acid. The reaction creates electricity and another compound called lead sulfate. In a new or healthy battery, the lead sulfate produced is usually broken down to lead and sulfuric acid during the charging process. However, in a tired old battery, or one that has been discharged over a long time, the lead sulfate crystallizes into a solid form instead of converting back to lead and sulfuric acid. The crystalline lead sulfate coats the lead plates and wears out the battery’s performance. The battery can longer charge or create electric power. The process is known as sulfation and is quite normal in lead acid batteries. Sulfation is the major killer of car batteries. Sulfation commonly occurs in lead acid batteries that do not get enough charge. It is common in batteries in city cars with plenty of accessories that require constant load of electricity. Cars driven on city roads hardly travel fast and are in most cases stuck in traffic jams. In such cases, the motor is usually idle or working at low speed which means it does not charge the battery as sufficiently as it should. [caption id="attachment_63" align="aligncenter" width="300"] How to recondition Lead Acid Battery[/caption]The problem is not just restricted to cars. Even electric wheelchairs often suffer sulfation. Users of electric wheelchairs often don’t charge the battery long enough to ensure it is fully charged. A lead acid battery needs at least 14 hours charging to reach full saturation, but hardly do wheelchair batteries get that amount of charging. It is no surprise that wheelchair batteries hardly last more than two years. Golf cart batteries usually last longer than wheelchair batteries because they get fully charged overnight and whenever they are not in use. There are many battery problems that stem from sulfation. It not only lowers the battery’s capacity, but also results in longer recharging times, creates high temperatures when the battery is working, and even increases the amount of corrosion inside the battery.

CAN SULFATION BE REVERSED?

Oftentimes sulfation can be reversed and a dead battery can be brought back to life again. This restoration process involves the use of a special battery charger that sends a high current through the battery, breaking down the crystalline lead sulfate coat into lead and sulfuric acid. The high current actually cleans the lead plates and restores the battery’s charging capacity. Some companies sell anti-sulfation devices that prevent sulfation from occurring on battery terminals. This type of technology is more of preventive but does not reverse the process once it has occurred inside the battery. Worse still, inducing a high current can possibly harm the battery and even promote grid corrosion. The best way to revive a battery that has adversely been affected by sulfation is by reconditioning it to its original state. So when you see your car battery gone all gray with sulfation, the first thing you should consider is not to throw it away, but learn how to recondition it. Lead acid battery repair is not rocket science. Anyone can learn the skill and perform the repairs perfectly well. You may even consider repairing dead batteries and selling them for a profit once you learn how it is done. You’ll only need a small investment, but the returns will be quite significant. All you need is a lead acid battery repair kit.
